Huntington Reservoir (3-3-2010) Click pics for full size
Could winter be breaking?? It was nice today, around 40 and the sun decided to come out! I hear its supposed to be even warmer this weekend Helen and I decided to head up to Huntington, IN., today for dinner and a movie, of course I had to stop and get some pictures. This first one was taken near the Little Turtle Beach, looking east down the lake.
Helen hanging out on the rocks. In the summer, the area directly behind her is the beach. This is a flood control reservoir and the water levels are dropped substantially during the winter so in retrospect we are standing on the bottom of the lake ;)
Looking across the lake to the north. On the right side, across the lake, is the main boat ramp.
Foreground is the beach (normally covered by water) the dam is seen in the background.
I took this picture from Little Turtle Beach S.R.A. This is looking down the lake to the east. There is some open water along the south shore of the lake.
A little closer up on the open water. I didn't notice the birds in the water until I got home and was looking through these pictures, otherwise I would have tried to zoom in on them a bit more.
Just another shot looking to the north east across the lake.
After leaving the beach area we headed across the lake to the observation mound. This was taken from the OM looking east across the lake.
From the observation mound looking to the south west, this is the lake side of the dam. You can see where the water level is during summer pool by the dark water line on the rocks. During severe flooding I have seen the water level as high as just a few feet below the road. (Where I am standing was under water)
I didn't figure it would be very nice to only get pictures of half the dam so we headed across the highway to get some pictures from the river side of the dam. Most of the time the water is just boiling up from below the dam, I have never seen these 3 large gates open, but it sure would be a cool site! Just let me move first.
Final shot of the day, looking downriver from the dam. Where is all the water going? Well from here its going down the Wabash across and down through Indiana eventually dumping into the Ohio river near Evansville. From there on to the Mississippi river and ultimately into the Gulf of Mexico :) Hope you enjoyed the pictures. It was nice to get out of the house without putting on 5 layers of clothing first. More to come.
