12 Mile Hike On The Kekionga Trail 4-16-2010
I must say, this hike went much faster than I expected it to. I had never really timed myself hiking before, turns out that I average about 2.8 MPH. So in a little over 4 hours I walked the Kekionga Trail (ALL 12 MILES OF IT!) around Huntington Lake. Below is a map of the route I took, taken straight from my GPS. Below that are some pictures from the hike.

This hike started out easy enough, walking south along highway 5, however it soon entered the woods. This isn't the easiest walking one can do lol.
After a couple of miles the trail crossed the entrance road to the old south boat ramp, no longer in use, and now closed to vehicles as you can probably tell.
This trail goes in an out of all different kinds of areas, from roadway, to woods, conifer stands, along fields, and open areas. My personal favorite is the stretches of conifers, this was taken as I was just coming into a pine tree stand.
Some strange plants growing along the trail that I found picture worthy.
The trail did swing close enough to the lake for a picture now and then, this is a flood control reservoir and the water lever has not been raised to its summer level yet. Check out those clouds, this is just a few minutes before the rain started to fall.
This is where the trail get back on the road (CR 200) and heads north back over the lake. I also tweeted a pic from this area. Here you can see just how low the water is, it wont be long and all of the brown ground will be water.
I have always liked this high tension power line pole on stilts.
The DNR has some farm fields in the reservoir property. Here an old corn field from last year. I think these are left for the deer, although I could be wrong.
More pine trees! YEA! This is close to where I seen the turkey. Never seen a turkey in the wild before, but he ran right in front of me across the trail. It was sightly raining and I had my camera wrapped in a baggie in my pocket, so I could get a picture of him.
Some nice trees along the trail.
This is one seriously angry tree, anyone up for a climb??
Great hike, just went quicker than expected, I suppose if I were hiking the Knobstone Trail, or the Appalachian Trail, I could average 20 or so miles a day pretty easily. If the opportunity to thru-hike the Appalachian Trail ever comes along, I will be there. Hope you liked the pics. Time to start planning my next stunt , I mean activity :)
